Adam Nash joins Fitocracy as an investor

I’m incredibly excited and proud to announce a new investor in Fitocracy: Adam Nash. He just recently joined Wealthfront as COO and spent the last year as an Executive in Residence at Greylock Partners. Before that, he held executive leadership positions at Linkedin and eBay.

I first met Adam in early 2012 while I was out in the Bay Area for the 500 Startups accelerator. Right from the beginning, he impressed me with his keen understanding of Fitocracy. Over the past several months, Adam has generously offered his time to help advise us on product strategy, consumer psychology, and fundraising, among other things. His experience in building great products is second to none, so when he brought up the idea of investing in Fitocracy, I jumped at the chance.

I’m looking forward to work more closely with Adam to build Fitocracy into a great, lasting company.

P.S. If you want to build better products, read Adam’s blog. You are guaranteed to be smarter for it.

fitocracy:

Over 50 lovely people showed up at the first official Fitocracy NYC meetup last night. It was an event full of hugs, laughs, drinks, squats, and love. Thank you to all the amazing Fitocrats who attended, especially the ones who came out all the way from Boston, Washington DC, Florida, Michigan, and California! <3 <3 <3

Last night was truly amazing. I was so humbled to see so many people from our wonderful community come together from all over the country. I never would’ve imagined something like this would happen when Fitocracy was just starting out 2 years ago.

Fitocracy: Two Years In

Today marks the two year anniversary of the day my partner, Dick, and I started working on Fitocracy. What a ride so far. Like any startup, we’ve had our fair share of highs and lows. This is a brief reflection on the past two years, in roughly chronological order:

  • Moved into a cheap Brooklyn apartment to kick off a period of time where Dick and I did nothing but work, eat, work out, sleep, and work some more. 10AM - 3AM days were the norm. I still get a little nostalgic for the days where we’d freeze our asses off next to each other, bundled in hoodies with an electric heater struggling to maintain a bearable room temperature, as we coded as if our lives depended on it.
  • Took a low-rent alpha version of a website through rounds of iterations, scaling woes, and technical restructuring, all to lead to the current state of the product, which is worlds apart from where we started.
  • Received an amazing and completely unexpected response from Reddit when we first posted about Fitocracy at r/fitness.
  • Joined a wonderful community at WeWork in Spring 2011. I can attribute many of our wins to this move.
  • Grew from 2 to 3 with the addition of Daniel Roesler, who is our CTO today. We wouldn’t be here today without him.
  • Experienced what it was like to be the subject of an XKCD comic. Thank you, Randall.
  • Reached 100,000 registered users the Fall of 2011. Months prior, we thought we’d be lucky to hit 50k by the end of the year.
  • There was a stretch where we didn’t think we’d be able to raise capital and would have to close shop. Fortunately, we managed to raise a seed round of financing from a group of fantastic investors, including 500 Startups, ENIAC Ventures, OCA Ventures, Great Oaks VC, and quite a few others. Thank you for believing in our team and our vision. We wouldn’t be here without you.
  • Spent 4 months in Mountain View to participate in Batch 3 of the 500 Startups Accelerator Program. Some of our most stressful, productive, and valuable experiences took place during this time.
  • Convinced the amazingly talented Jared Cocken to join our team in February 2012. The phallic connotations of the exec team’s names notwithstanding, Jared brought his deep talent and experience to bear and completely transformed Fitocracy’s brand and product experience. He continues to amaze us every day.
  • Released the official Fitocracy iPhone app, which was downloaded nearly 100,000 times in the first week. This launch finally brought a mobile-first design to the Fitocracy experience and was met with exceptionally positive reviews, which we continue to see today.
  • Doubled the size of our team from 4 to 8, adding on a group of amazingly talented engineers to help us tackle all the challenges we face in the quest to build a world where fitness is possible for everyone.

Today, I am blessed to be able to come into work every day to work with some of the best, most talented people I know and to better the lives for hundreds of thousands of people (and soon, millions). We’ve managed to accomplish incredible feats in the past two years. And there is so much more to do, so much more for the world to see from us. I expect us to reach heights several orders of magnitude above where we currently are. If we succeed, then the world will be better for it.

Thank you to everyone who has placed their trust in us during this journey so far. Here’s to many more years of even greater things.
